Hydro One CEO receives $4 Million Salary while 60,000 families have their power turned off.

Kathleen Wynne and the Liberal Government in Ontario have increased Hydro Rates (Electricity costs) by over 200 % since 2008.

In many rural parts of Ontario the costs are even higher since Ontario Hydro companies can charge higher costs for "Delivery" of the electricity along wires to each home.

In many cases Hydro Bills have gone from $100 a month to over $500 per month. That's $6,000 / year for electricity needed to run lights, refrigerators, stoves, heating and cooling. Some people who made the switch to Geothermal heating and cooling are seeing Hydro Bills above $1,000 per month since the pumps needed to circulate the glycol are run on Electricity.

This year the Hydro companies have turned off the power to 60,000 homes for not paying their Electricity bills ....

Meanwhile, this guy - Mayo Schmidt  the New CEO of Hydro One has decided to pay himself  $ 4 Million dollars a year Salary !  For what ? Extracting every last penny from the poor people of Ontario ? Please, tell me this is just a really really bad joke.

People in Ontario can no longer pay their Hydro Bills and are having their Electricity turned off and this guy gives himself a $3.5 Million dollar raise ?

It is Winter here and many people still heat their homes with Electricity, and now this guy, who elected to pay himself $4 Million a year is turning off their power ? Something is very wrong in Ontario.

No wonder everybody in Ontario wants to get off the grid.

Notes:

Number of disconnections

According to the OEB, nearly 60,000 residential customers were disconnected from their hydro services in Ontario for non-payment last year – 9,772 of which were Hydro One customers. The OEB claims utility providers reconnect 99 per cent of households within two business days of disconnection. However, closer analysis of the data provided by the OEB shows that for Hydro One, this figure is significantly lower.
Of the nearly 10,000 disconnections performed by Hydro One last year, only 7,269 were reconnected, or roughly 75 per cent.

    9. I beg to differ. Hydro One is not working within the free capitalistic model. It has a monopoly with government sponsored, benefits funding and mandate. As such, it should be highly regulated as far as bonus' and salaries for the spoiled CEO's and greedy profiteers that pose as servants of the people, the politicians.

    16. A corrupt government is a single corrupt government -- not a reference for how all governments are going to act when they do "anything". I could tell you that we don't deal with this government-sponsored overpricing of energy where I live in Denmark, for instance.

We're more worried about the increasing water prices that come as a result of them REMOVING regulations for agriculture pollution, or the risks of seeing lead in the water because they're removing regulations dictating that this shouldn't be allowed.

Denmark also has some of the highest taxes in the world, alongside the rest of Scandinavia -- yet we're not suffering anywhere near as much as I hear from NA, or anywhere near as much as your post would imply.

    3. Imagine the wood stove you could buy with your hydro rates. The private sector needs to invest development and promotion into more efficient technologies that are hard to tax to combat this. I heat everything (home, cabin and RV) with wood stoves and while it take a little effort, it costs me little to nothing annually for heat. Invest in batteries and green charging solutions like Solar or wind and follow continually improving energy requirements of appliances. It's not a solution for the masses, but it's certainly an option. I feel like this is a one sided, biased article, but I definitely see the realistic areas of concern and those need to be directed at the government not this CEO.

    2. Then maybe the "system" needs to be changed!" We can't continue to keep justifying this kind of greed by excusing it as "it's the system." Most of us work hard and pay high taxes, especially here in Ontario. This whole electricity diabolical here in Ontario is ludicrous. When you look at your monthly electrical bill each month and then see one person skimming off $4ml/year, it's enough to make one cynical about our "system."

    5. 4 million dollars is not that much money, especially for a company the size of hydro one. Also I am not sure people understand how the system works. Hydro One's profit margins have not changed significantly, they just pass the cost on to consumers. Ontario raising costs doesn't transfer over to more profits for private companies. He would take the same salary regardless of how much or little Ontario sets their base rates at. It's misguided rage, you could theoretically say that since Ontario is raising prices, Solar Companies are benefiting. If a CEO of a Solar Company took a large salary, would you also get angry at that? The only difference is that a Solar Company directly benefits from Ontario jacking their rates and resellers like Hydro One don't. So really you should be getting angry at all those solar companies profiting from Ontario raising rates.

While his ridiculous salary is an offense to all hard working people who would like to keep their lights on, it's not his salary that is the problem. It's the entire corrupt system from Wynne on down. As long as people in this province keep voting for Liberals we will continue to have this problem. That's despite having the "debt reduction charge" removed from my bill & that sucker was $75/month.
I am a single mother of a teenager. We are on prorated billing with electric heat. I hang dry all laundry (except intimates). All cleaning; vacuuming, laundry, dishwasher etc are run after 7pm. We zone heat in necessary rooms only and brand new windows, premium under padding with the new carpets has removed the need for a dehumidifier & we plastic wrap the windows in winter.
STILL, my "smart meter" has INCREASED my bill considerably every single month! An average of $135/ month. How does this happen when nobody is usually home prior to 6pm?

I had no heat as my oil furnace needs electricity to turn on and for the blower. I have always known that WE the People CANNOT DEPEND ON ANYONE FOR HELP. So I already know that I will not have heat at times this winter, like NOW. I blame myself for allowing the government to over tax me when I worked, and for paying my taxes to thieves.
So prayer and GOD be with ME and others this winter. Sending Blessings

  37. He is not worth even 200,000 when he manages a company as poorly as he has. Furthermore we need to get the Ombudsman reinstated to be able to look into this scam. It was legislated in 2015 that he could not look into Ontario Hydro's business dealings.Bill 91 paves the way for partial privatization of Hydro One, and specifically removes the utility from the jurisdiction of independent officers of the Legislature, including the Ombudsman, the Auditor General and the Information and Privacy Commissioner. Allowing them to be free of scrutiny. Nobody is worth 4 million for that position so you can imagine what is lower management makes.

  41. Go off the grid all you want: Hydro has so many super-overpaid piglets at the trough, both union and management who will stay on the payroll. Even if there is only one customer left, all the snorting little piglets will still have jobs. To pay them, the provincial government is going to levy a ‘minimum consumption’ fee, in other words, you will have to pay a minimum flat-rate amount for hydo, even though you are off the grid. You WILL be penalized for going green.

His wage is ridiculous but that is what he was making at old company and the board decided to offer him that wage to come run hydro. So the only people you can blame is the liberal government cause they still share the majority share hold. They offerd me 4 million a year i woulf take it too. And also hydro one doesnt decide their own rates opg does wich is also the government. So next time before you get mad at a hydro employee take a look at who is giving the orders. The liberal government....

  65. Thanks to Ms Wynne this is now a private company so blame everything on our wonderful Premier and the Ontario Liberals that have taxed us in Ontario to death over the McGuinty and Wynne Premierships. Hydro One just hired a customer relation VP. 13 Million people in Ontario and you would think they could of hired someone from Ontario. No he is from Saskatchewan. Complain all you want, funny how no one will admit voting for Wynne but the Liberals somehow got elected again. Wynne cost us Hydro users the price we are now paying. How much did this guy pay himself extra 3.5 million and Wynne sits back and does nothing. You think 3.5 million is a lot of money well just look at how much the Liberals have cost us with Solar, Wind Turbines, and the Gas Plants scandal talking the talk thinking this is green, well it is not green. The cleanest and cheapest way to produce Electricity is by Nuclear. Electricity rates would be much lower if there was not a Gas Plant scandal and if we were not paying so much to the private producer from Wind and Solar. A lot of the solar farms have foreign owner so we pay twice now not having ownership of the production of Hydro. Good luck with this. Until we have someone in office that will stick up for us tax payers before the death deed is done by politician then all your typing is just a way to vent, nothing more.

I think it started when Hydro went on strike in '72. I'm sure my father and Sir Adam Beck would be spinning in their graves if they saw what's happened to Hydro. Having said that, it appears this province has become, or is quickly on its way to becoming the African equivalent of Zimbabwe.
